During Pride Month, the Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York (LASNNY) will participate in several community Pride events across its 16-county service area, connecting LGBTQ+ individuals and families with free civil legal services and resources.
LASNNY provides legal assistance in matters including housing, public benefits, family law, disability advocacy, consumer issues, and access to health care and other essential services. For many LGBTQ+ individuals, including and especially those living in rural communities, access to legal support can play a critical role in achieving stability and security.
One such client, Marti*, a young transgender man living in the North Country, turned to LASNNY after his application for Social Security Disability benefits was denied. Living with severe mental illnesses and struggling to maintain employment, Marti said he often felt isolated and unsure where else to turn for help.
“I have no idea where else I could have gone,” Marti said. “Legal Aid was the best thing.”
With assistance from a LASNNY attorney, Marti was ultimately approved for Social Security Disability benefits, providing a stable source of income and helping him regain a sense of independence.
“It made me feel like I can finally be a part of society,” he said. “I finally feel free.”

LASNNY serves residents across Northeastern New York through offices in Albany, Amsterdam, Canton, Gloversville, Plattsburgh, and Saratoga Springs.
